The idea of cinnamon rolls goes back many centuries, to when the ancient Egyptians used to bake sweet dough rolls with honey. The apple and caramel additions are distinctly more recent American influences.
This recipe was born out of a desire for a vegan-friendly cake that didn't sacrifice any of the flavor or texture of its non-vegan counterparts. After much trial and error, the perfect combination of ingredients was found.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 cup apple sauce
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 pieces apples
- 1/2 cup vegan butter
- 1/2 cup vegan caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. In another bowl, combine the apple sauce and half of the brown sugar.
- Combine the dry and wet ingredients to make a dough. Roll out the dough on a floured surface.
- For the filling, mix the rest of the brown sugar with the cinnamon. Spread vegan butter on the rolled-out dough and sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon mixture on top. Add chopped apples.
- Roll up the dough, then cut it into equal-sized pieces. Place these rolls in a greased baking tin.
- Bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let it cool before drizzling with caramel sauce.
